Who is a bowel cancer screening for?

The cancer risk grows as we age.  Bowel cancers become harder to treat the more developed they are, and by the time symptoms are showing, the cancer may be advanced.

Patients have many reasons for wanting to use our bowel cancer screening service, but the most common are:

  • Peace of mind
  • You have lost family or friends to cancer
  • You have had cancer before and want reassurance that it hasn’t returned
  • You are committed to staying healthy and want to include a bowel cancer screening as part of your annual health assessment

Bowel cancer screening is one of the most vital health checks for both men and women aged 45 and over and early detection can be life saving.

What does the bowel cancer screening test for?

  • Our CT colonography scan is highly effective at spotting colonic polyps. These are small growths that are often harmless but can sometimes turn into bowel cancer if left untreated. Finding and removing polyps early reduces your future cancer risk.
  • This scan also examines nearby organs, such as the pancreas and kidneys, giving you a broader picture of your abdominal health.
  • Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or simply want peace of mind, our bowel cancer screening will provide clear answers and guidance so you can take the next step with confidence.

Why book an Advanced Cancer Screening?

  • Safe and accurate CT scan: We use CT colonography, a minimally invasive scan that provides detailed images of the colon, abdomen, and kidneys.
  • Early detection improves outcomes: Spotting bowel cancer in its early stages makes it easier to treat and less likely to spread.
  • Watch for symptoms: Screening can help identify the cause if you notice:
  • Blood in your stool
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Ongoing abdominal pain
  • Supports timely treatment: Detecting issues early allows for more effective care and better outcomes.

What happens on the day?

Preparation for your screening

We will schedule your test and send you a preparation kit, which includes a laxative to clear your bowels before the scan. We’ll also provide you with information on what to eat before your scan.

Welcoming you in clinic

On the day of your bowel cancer screening, your radiographer will meet with you to discuss your concerns and talk you through the screening. You will then be provided with a comfortable gown and slippers to change into.

Duration

Your CT Colonography will take 45 minutes and you can go home shortly after your appointment.

The scan

The CT Colonography is a straightforward procedure where a small tube is gently inserted into your bottom to introduce gas into the bowel, which helps expand it for clearer imaging. A CT colonography uses X-rays to capture detailed images of the bowel, helping to identify any abnormalities.

Receiving your results

Your results will be ready within 24 hours, so you can be confident in your next steps. If your screening results show any abnormalities, our team will guide you. This may include referral for a colonoscopy or further imaging.

Weekend and Evening Appointments Available
